POGGIO GRAFFETTA

Poggio Graffetta is a Sicilian farm of recent acquisition. A property of 27 hectares of vineyards at an altitude of 150 meters above sea level, in the Ragusa area close to Ispica, it is near the road which leads to the sea of Marina di Pozzallo from the village. It produces powerful concentrated wines. The territory of Poggio Graffetta occupies the calcareous base of the first Hyblean Mountains. It is a rocky soil, originated from calcareous stones and formed from the stratification of an old coral reef. The climate is warm, dry, windy and temperatures are mitigated by the proximity of the sea. Vines have a long and steady ripening. Plants shoot soon thanks to a sunny spring and an early summer; then fruiting slows down in mid summer and in September late vines reach their ripening.

Four varieties of vines have been planted in Poggio Graffetta. Ispica, like the whole Val di Noto, is the land of the Nero d’Avola, whose vineyards are cultivated with the bush-trained system typical of the Mediterranean coasts. Also known as “Calabrian”, it is a late vine which ripens between mid September and the beginning of October even in these latitudes. And also the Syrah and Petit verdot with their full ripening thanks to their good genetic acidity. Last but not least, the Cabernet which, under the light of the long summer, completely loses its aggressive and herbaceous characteristic to soften in a tropical sweet taste.
